The Southern Kaduna Youth and Students Forum (SKYSFOM) on Monday petitioned the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) over closure of schools in the area. The students who stormed the commission in large numbers submitted the petition addressed to the Executive Secretary of the NHRC.

“Whatever may be the motive and intention of the state government to close our institutions, we want the Federal Government, the National Assembly, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and all concerned citizens of Nigeria to persuade the state government to open our schools in Southern Kaduna to enable us to continue with our academic programmes,” the petition signed by the National President of SKYSFOM, Mr Galadima Jesse said.

The petition further reads: “We view the continued closure of the schools as an infringement on our fundamental human right. It has also caused disunity in Southern Kaduna and thrown many students into an untold hardship, and crippled businesses in the area. We want NHRC to act in this direction because we see this as an abuse of the education system by the el-Rufa’i government.

“Kaduna State University, Kafanchan Campus, Kaduna State College of Education Gidan Waya and Kaduna State College of Nursing, Kafanchan, have remained closed since November 2016.”

Meanwhile, officials of the Commission, while receiving the petition, promised to act on it.
